It was tremendous, and CCP did a whole video around it to promote Dust... but was a player-corp Caldari spaceship actually destroyed and slameed into the surface? ...I just wasn't sure enough to include it as an example. But you're right---it's too big a story to miss! No it happened in Dust and EVE, albet to a limited extent. That first article was what got peoples attention and people speculated and metagame thought about the upcoming real world event and wondered if it might be tied to that: the event being PAX East 2013 (CCP was to be there).

Same day: Admiral Yanala gives first weekly address from orbit of Caldari Prime

March 20th, T-2 days: Concord Issues Luminaire Travel Advisory in the wake of escalated conflict
And advisories were issued. The moment you logged in the game, you were "advised" not to go to Luminaire. So naturally, everyone (mostly) flocked to Luminaire.
Same day: Federation Navy releases Caldari Prime status report after stand-off with Shiigeru. By now, people are refreshing and checking the World News feed or putting them into RSS readers to push notifications. Things are looking extremely dangerous (and exciting).
March 21st, T-1 day: Caldari Prime unrest escalated further, Provist response called into question. Yes, that's a "weapons ready alert and fully prepared to enter low orbit" titan above your heads.
There are many great posts but what was the breaking point? When a CONCORD vessel ge...
